水仙はヒガンバナ科スイセン属に分類される多年草です。原産地は地中海沿岸からヨーロッパ南西部で、日本にはかなり古くに渡来したという説もありますが、文献や絵図等で確認できるのは室町時代以降です。
たくさんの種類がありますが、伝統的ないけばなで使われるのは白い花弁と黄色の副花冠を持つ日本水仙です。自由花という比較的新しい様式では、日本水仙以外にも黄水仙やラッパ水仙などさまざまな水仙を用います。
球根から生え、株状になっているのが特徴です。葉の間から花が出ます。自然界では冬に葉を伸ばし、早春に開花しますが、切花としては12月〜1月にかけて流通します。見た目の美しさだけでなく、馥郁とした香でも僕らを楽しませてくれる花です。
いけばなの世界ではとても愛される存在で、『七種伝』『立華十九ヶ條』という伝書にも水仙のことが記述されています。いずれも非常に特殊な扱いをするもので、ここでは詳述できませんが、いけばなを学ぶ者にとっては冬にぜひいけたい憧れの花です。
水仙の学名 Narcissus は、ギリシャ神話の美少年ナルキッソスに由来します。ナルキッソスは水面に映った自分の姿に恋をし、やがてその場を離れられず命を落とし、その後には水仙の花が咲き乱れていたという物語です。お気づきのとおり、この物語は精神分析の用語ナルシシズムという言葉の語源にもなっています。
水仙は和歌には登場せず、江戸時代に盛んになった俳諧ではよくみられます。このことからも水仙は室町時代より前には日本には無かったのではと推察されます。

Daffodil is is a perennial plant in the amaryllis family. It comes from the Mediterranean area and the southwest of Europe. Some people say it came to Japan a very long time ago. But we can see it in books and pictures from the Muromachi period.
There are many kinds of daffodils. In traditional ikebana, people often use Japanese daffodil. It has white petals and a yellow center. In a newer ikebana style called “Jiyuka” people also use yellow daffodils ,trumpet daffodils and other kinds of daffpdils.
Daffodils grow from bulbs. They grow in one clump. The flowers come out from between the leaves. In nature, the leaves grow in winter, and the flowers bloom in early spring. As cut flowers, they are sold from December to January. They are beautiful, and they also have a sweet and rich smell.
In the world of ikebana, daffodils are very loved. Old ikebana books like Shichishu-den and Rikka Jukyuka-jo write about daffodils. They explain special ways to arrange them. Many students of ikebana want to arrange daffodils in winter.
The scientific name of daffodil is Narcissus. This name comes from Narcissus in Greek mythology. He was a beautiful young man. He fell in love with his own face in the water. He could not leave that place and died there. After that, many daffodils bloomed. This story is also the origin of the word “narcissism.”
Daffodils do not appear in old Japanese Waka poems. But they often appear in Haikai poems in the Edo period. From this, I think daffodils were not in Japan before the Muromachi period.
