It’s a difficult kanji, but it’s read “rengyo.” It is a cute tree with yellow flowers that feel like spring.
Rengyo has long young branches that hang down. When the branches grow long and touch the ground, they can grow roots there. In ikebana, this feature is important, and it is treated as a “Taremonoe (hanging plants) ” plant. In the traditional style called “shoka,” one or two hanging branches are shown to express the character of rengyo.
There are several main types, such as rengyo, Shina rengyo, and Chosen rengyo. Usually, rengyo has long hanging branches, but Shina rengyo tends to grow straight upward. Recently, many flowers sold in shops are this Shina rengyo type, so it is hard to find ones with hanging branches. In ikebana, hanging branches are important, so this can be difficult.
Rengyo has hollow stems, while Shina and Chosen rengyo have thin partitions inside the stems. This helps tell them apart.
It looks like a tree, but in ikebana it is classified as something between a tree and a plant, called “tsuyomono.”
